“The horrors persist…but so do us creative weirdos!”
The Weird Horror Film Festival was created in 2025 as a way to collectively and creatively express and channel our hopes & fears, disgust and remorse . As the days become shorter providing a project with a purpose, to connect with like minded folk and gather to show our support for each other amidst the true life horrors.
Horror films have long been a safe controlled way to explore morbid and dark curiosities. To face what is kept hidden from society, and to have a safe space to experience heightened arousal of the senses and responses.
This year the horrors of the world have further intensified.
To create a film in these current times which is within the realm of “Weird” and “Horror” we wish for film makers to empower themselves and others by using the powers of creativity to twist the narrative, have some bloody fun, meet new friends and fly your weirdo flag high.
We are honored to have Dr Chelsea Nichols and Aaron Lister aka ‘Curator of Screams’ as judges of films made for the Weird Horror Film Festival awards ceremony. All contestants are eligible for and receive an award.
In 2025 the Grand Supreme Darling award plaque was awarded to Tūāraki Kāpiti Tribe for their film ‘Tunnel Vision’.
This year the ritual of relinquishing and bestowing the Grand Supreme Darling plaque begins its legacy, as it will be passed on to this years overall winner.
